Abstract

This paper investigates the impact of the quality of governance on the quality of life in Northern European countries. As public sector governance is related to the interaction between governments and citizens and organisations, being a key aspect in economic and political development, the research focuses on determining which variables employed to determine the quality of governance are most influential on the quality of life at the national level. The regression analysis is realised on a set of Northern European countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, and Norway), over the period 2008-2017. The data employed is based on a wide variety of information available on Eurostat and the World Bank. The quality of governance is evidenced through the government effectiveness, control of corruption and political stability indicators, whereas the quality of life concept is assessed through the life expectancy at birth, employment rate, and self-perceived health. Results indicate that voice and accountability has the most significant impact on the quality of life variables, with direct influence, followed by the rule of law, also with direct influence. The regulatory quality and political stability seem to restrain the quality of life, through constraining laws and regulations. Therefore, results confirmed the main aim of the study, establishing some crucial government factors which determine high-quality life standards, emphasising the determinants that may be improved.
