INTRODUCTORY ANALYSIS FOR CONDUCTING LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF SILK COCOON IN BRAZIL

Abstract

Incorporating silk to clothing creates value. However, with increasing worldwide environmental concern, the environmental implications of silk production practices should not be disregarded. A relevant part of environmental assessment studies focuses on the final product (i.e.: silk clothes), however, upstream and downstream processes also contribute to total impacts. Therefore, the objective of this study is to present an introductory analysis for conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the silk cocoon production system in Brazil (one of the world’s largest silk cocoon producers). To that end, the principles of LCA were be applied, following the International Standardization Organization (ISO) standards (ISO 14040 and 14044), and the Umberto software tool was used for product system modelling. The product system comprises from the receiving of the silkworm to the selling of the silk cocoon. This introductory analysis allows academia and practitioners to have a systemic view of the cocoon production process, as well as it spots the main difficulties and limitations for conducting an LCA study of such system under Brazilian conditions. Nevertheless, it also provides a qualitative inventory for the cocoon production process, with necessary inputs and outputs. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there have been no studies of the silk cocoon production under Brazilian conditions in the literature up to the moment this piece of research was conducted.
