PERSPECTIVES AND SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT OF PANEL HOUSING ESTATES IN INDUSTRIAL AREAS

Abstract

Housing is the basic and social need of every person. Urban development has its own direction and character, planning. It was not different in the case of former Czechoslovakia after 1960 where preference was given to construction of residential buildings using prefabricated units, a choice of direction, which laid a foundation for a mass housing estates development thenceforth. The change in the political system after 1989 led to the creation of a post-socialist society under which the panel housing mass production trend has been replaced by a longing for quality, consequently posing, among other things, questions such as how to approach the issues of the panel housing estates, what are the perspectives on their sustainable construction and what threats are posed by their further construction. The perspective on the construction of panel housing estates is documented in selected localities of the Czech Republic, taking into account the diversity of an urbanized area. The case study demonstrates both the complexity but also the positives of the panel housing estate construction under the conditions of the 21st century.
