A NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF LANGUAGE DURING MIDDLE CHILDHOOD, IN CHILDREN WHO PRACTICE TAEKWONDO
Abstract
Language is a central area of neuropsychological assessment. The child's capacity to phonologicallyanalyze the words represents one of its important components. The purpose of this study is to emphasize the influences of Taekwondo practice on the phonological processing capacity of children in the middle childhood period. The research wasconducted on a total of 15 children aged between 6 and 11 years. To assess their language development level, it was used the NEPSY battery: A Developmental Neuropsychological Assessment for the Romanian population. The subtests used were the following: Phonological Processing, Speeded Naming and Comprehension of Instructions. After processing the results achieved by children in thethree subtests, the following aspects were highlighted: the average scaled (standardized) score for the Phonological Processing subtest was 10.30 (+/- 3.335); the average scaledscorefor the Speeded Naming subtest was 28.20 (+/- 12.917); the average scaled score for theComprehension of Instructions subtestwas 14 (+/- 1.247). The obtained scores are above the expected level,which emphasizes the influences of Taekwondo practice on the language development inchildren.
