PROTECTING THE RIGHTS AND INTERESTS OF CHILDREN EXPOSED TO PARENTAL CONFLICTS IN FAMILY ENVIRONMENT
Abstract
Data shows an increasing number of children and youth growing up in a family atmosphere burdened with parental conflicts. Hostility in relationships between parents often spills over into the parent-child relationship. This paper will present the results of quantitative research which was focused on correlations between children's perception of parental conflicts, and the quality of the parents' marriage, and the experience of parental acceptance-rejection during childhood. The survey included 468 students of the University of Zagreb. Results are based on subjective assessment and participants retrospective testimony about the family environment in which they grew up during their childhood. Descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance and correlation analysis were used for data analysis. The results confirm the hypothesis that parents who are frequently in conflict often show hostile and critical behaviour towards their children and are less emotionally available for their needs. In conclusion, the practical value of these research results is emphasised. Special importance is accorded to developing prevention and treatment programmes for parents with impaired quality of marriage. In addition, the need to improve the system of protecting the rights and interests of children exposed to parental conflict is highlighted.
