POST-PENITENTIARY ASSISTANCE AS A CHALLENGE FOR MODERN EUROPE
Abstract
The problem of assisting people who have committed crimes has always been one of the most controversial themes among society. Fact of prison isolation, as well as long-term custodial sentences, makes it very difficult for a person to adapt to the society after leaving it. Assistance and effective action on people who have left prison not only helps to adapt them to everyday life in society but also, in particular, prevents them from entering into renewed conflict with the law. These people cannot be left without help. The provision of support should be an overarching objective for governmental and non-governmental institutions, which have an important role in this process of re-adaption. We must not overlook the fact that effective post-penitentiary assistance increases the level of social security. This article is mainly devoted to the analysis of new solutions in the field of post-penitentiary assistance and to the exemplification of the extent of post-penitentiary assistance provided over the last few years in selected European countries.
