PARALANGUAGE SYSTEM AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING
Abstract
Non-verbal elements of communication are part of every interpersonal communication. This also applies to the interpreting process. We can see non-verbal elements mainly in consecutive interpreting, in which the speaker, interpreter and listener form the so-called trichotomy (they are in the same place at the same time. The situation in simultaneous interpreting is different because the interpreter is usually ‘invisible’ in the booth). The subject of this article is the influence of paraverbal system on the quality of consecutive interpreting. It observes the influence of voice features on interpreter’s performance, and examines to what extent voice features can influence the quality of interpreter’s performance. The research outcomes show that voice features depend on various factors, among other things on interpreting direction (interpreting into mother tongue and interpreting into a foreign language). We found out that while interpreting into their mother tongue, the examined interpreters had better results in their tempo of speech, intonation range and in handling stress. Hesitations in this interpreting direction were not significant. While interpreting into a foreign language, better results were achieved in categories of loudness and tempo of speech but hesitations were far more significant than in the first case. Hesitations are related to the fact that formulating one’s thoughts in mother tongue is not such an arduous task as in a foreign language. We also found out that the use of paraverbal elements in interpreting can be improved by intentional training.
