THE ADVANTAGE OF SOCIAL PRIORITIES OVER ECONOMIC IN THE RESTRUCTURING OF HARD COAL MINING IN THE COUNTRIES OF CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
Abstract
The article is devoted to the answer to the question, what priorities prevailed in the process of restructuring hard coal mining in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, in which this sector had a significant share in the structure of the economy (Poland, Czech Republic and Romania)? The analysis was based on the study of the relationship between the level of coal prices on the European market and the level of employment. The hypothesis of the article is that in the Central and Eastern European countries, social priorities dominate over economic ones in the processes of restructuring hard coal mining. The hypothesis verification tools include the linear regression, correlation coefficients and determination of the level of employment and the level of coal prices in USD. The hypothesis is supported by strongly negative regression coefficients and correlation between prices and the level of employment in Poland, Czech Republic (especially in the bi-annual shift) and in Romania (especially with annual shift) (in the case of dominance of economic priorities, the relationship between the level of prices and employment should be positive).
