THE ROLE OF CALISTHENICS IN OPTIMIZING THE MOTOR POTENTIAL OF THE STUDENTS
Abstract
Problem statement: In this paper we aimed to demolish the modern „myth” stating that when it comes to optimize the motor potential, „high-tech”, machine-assisted training is compulsory. This myth is wide spread in modern society. Many people believe that, in order to reach his maximum physical potential, one has to train with last-generation fitness machines. We strongly believe that old school, Progressive Calisthenics may be a viable alternative for improving several aspects of the motor potential of the students. A system of physical exercises that is natural, safe, functional, and requires minimum of resources for equipment and for the training area, is too valuable to be left unexplored. Method: The study was conducted between October 2015 - April 2016, on 40 students from "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy Bucharest. The subjects were divided into two groups of 20 students. The Control Group was involved in a Fitness Program using fitness machines and free weights. The Experiment Group was enrolled in a Progressive Calisthenics Program. They used exercises performed on the ground, at trellises, horizontal bars set at different heights, gym benches, etc.. Initial and Final Testing were conducted for a total of 8 parameters related to Motor Potential. Conclusions and Discussions: The findings showed statistically significant differences at the Final Test between the two groups in favor of the Experiment Group at the following parameters: Arms and Upper Torso Strength in Pulling and in Pushing Motion, Balance and Power-Coordination Complex. Statistically significant differences in favor of the Control Group was reported for the following parameters: Lumbar Muscle Strength, Legs Muscle Strength. For Abdominal Muscle Strength and Functional Test (Ruffier), both groups improved their performances at the Final Test, but no statistically significant differences between the two groups were found. Considering the findings, we came to the conclusion that the efficiency of Calisthenics exercises in optimizing various aspects of the Motor Potential of the young people is considerable. Therefore we consider that Calisthenics may be a viable alternative for other types of training in Physical Education and Sport classes in Universities.
