THE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE-BASED COPYING OF L.A. DURNOVO AND Г’.S. SHCHERBATOVA-SHEVYAKOVA

Abstract

This article presents the research into the school of science-based copying of L.A. Durnovo and T.S. Scherbatova-Shevyakova as a single system, including analysis of stylistic, aesthetic and artistic features of painting as well as technological aspects. The school of copying, which was formed in Russia in the early 20th century and became a unique phenomenon of national culture, practically ceased to exist in the second half of the century. Russian museums have collections of the best fresco copies created in various periods by copyists belonging to certain copying workshops of Old Russian painting. Of particular documentary value are copies of paintings made in the temples before the destruction, making it possible not only scientific, virtual, but also a real reconstruction of the original system of decoration of the art ensemble. The value of this kind of creativity, based on the deep development of reproducible material, has become apparent in our days, when with the help of copies made in the first decades of the XX century, is painstaking revival of unique monuments of wall painting, destroyed during the Second world war.
