Abstract

Background Taking into account, that many recent research papers about functional anatomy, emphasized strong connections between motor cerebral areas and pre-frontal ones and that professional training performed on a period of time longer than 5 years, produced cerebral hemispheres functional plastic modifications, we consider opportune, to study the effects of long term physical effort, over cerebral activity at athletes, with a professional sportive experience longer than 5 years, from different sports as handball and fence and compare the obtained results, in order to point out, the possible differences between studied sports. Methods Studied group was composed of 16 professional sportsmen, males, with average ages, heights and weights, 8 handball players and 8 fencers, characterized by different stress degrees of the upper members, active for between 5 and 12 years in one of the sportive activity. The most accurate method to investigate the activity of both cerebral hemispheres remains the electroencephalography (EEG), recorded with surface electrodes, placed on the scalp according to the electroencephalography 10-20 system. For the evaluation of beta1 EEG wave, recorded during some activities (successive relaxation and contraction of both fists), we used the Nihon-Kohden EEG-9200 device. Results Power spectre for beta 1 band frequency, generated a perfect synchronisation of all analysed moments, both for dominant cerebral hemisphere and for non-dominant one, at handball and fencers players, except the left occipital area, characterised by significant statistical differences Conclusions So, observing the obtained results, we can conclude, that long term physical effort influence different the activity of both cerebral hemisphere in accordance to the specific of studied sports.
