WATERFRONTS AS INTEGRAL PART OF CITIES: ADAPTATION AND RE-USE OF HARBOUR'S INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE IN BRATISLAVA
Abstract
The paper presents possibilities of adaptation and re-use of historical harbour areas with a focus on the area of Winter Harbour in Bratislava. The aim is to help to identify the aspects that are necessary to consider to propose the most sustainable future for this part of port that still contains some interesting structures of industrial heritage, currently inaccessible to the public. The research methods consisted on one hand, of a standard historical research to evaluate the built heritage of the Winter Harbour in Bratislava. On the other hand, to include information regarding a wider urban, ecologic and economic context, an analysis of current documents published by European Commission on the topic of inland waterway has been done, together with a graphical comparison of harbour areas of selected cities located on the Upper Danube branch of the Rhine-Danube Corridor. The major findings of the research have shown, in addition to the heritage value of selected structures, that Bratislava has the smallest port area among the selected cities both in term of percentage comparing harbour area to the overall city area and in sq. km. This means, that in order to work along the aims of European Commission, and the priorities it gives to the development of inland river transport, Bratislava should keep a fully functioning harbour. Therefore, in the case the Winter harbour is adapted for a different, more urban, function in the future in order to meet the current trends a possibility of a development of new port areas downstream the river should be examined.
