SOCIAL COMPETENCIES AND SELF-EFFICACY IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

The paper focuses on the description and analysis of social competencies and self-efficacy in university students. The research participants were 210 university students (68.6 % were male) with a mean age of 22.7 years. The research was conducted in two countries: Slovakia (N = 102) and Czech Republic (N = 106). The Social Skills Inventory developed by Riggio, & Carney and Sherer’s et al. Self-Efficacy Scale were used as the techniques of data gathering. The research results showed a significant relationship between the social competencies and self-efficacy. The overall level of social competencies in our group of university students was significantly associated with social expression, with the ability to engage in interpersonal communication. Male students demonstrated a higher degree of general self-efficacy compared to female ones. The significant interaction of the nationality and gender was also revealed. The educational and consulting implications were also discussed in the study.
