TEXT COMPRESSION IN THE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY OF A SCIENTIST

Abstract

The article deals with the peculiarities of information compression in the process of professional activity of a biologist (as a representative of the natural-science direction) and philologist (the representative of the humanitarian sciences). As the main method of research the semantic charting of the text, based on the psycholinguistic experiment, was used. The analysis of the themes and microthemes wording was based on the principle of matching/ mismatching of the wordings with the words from the whole texts: we defined the words from the texts and the words from participantsВ’ lexicon. Different strategies of information extraction based on the text compression in professional activity of a scientist are found out. It is established that 71% of the words used in the theme formulization of the scientific text coincide with the text vocabulary, and 69% of the words participating in the wording of the microthemes also comprise the words of the scientific text itself, which indicates the prevalence of contextual dependence and reliance on text structure in the process of compressing information in a scientific text. The situation is quite different with the artistic text: 14.2% of word coincidences in the wording of the theme and the text, and 33.1% in the formulizations of the microthemes. Such a result indicates a detachment from the context and reliance on personal experience and, possibly, a deeper analysis of the text in the course of the professional activities of the philologists.
