THE DIALECTICS OF BACHELOR’S AND MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMS

Abstract

The article discusses the processes taking place in the system of higher education in Russia. The purpose of the article is to identify the key differences between basic undergraduate and graduate educational programs. The article discusses the conditions and mechanisms required to ensure the continuity between bachelor’s and master’s degree programs as a basis for quality higher education. The article contains a comprehensive evaluation of basic undergraduate and graduate education programs offered by the Russian universities. A comparative analysis of international practice of implementing the master’s degree programs is contained in the article. Research methods used by the authors in preparation of this analysis are: deduction, comparative and structured logics analysis. The key findings are that the interface between bachelor’s and master’s degree programs is one of the most important prerequisites for successful functioning of continuous education system given the multilevel structure of education programs. Moreover, according to the practice in international education, Russian universities should offer their potential students both academic and/or practice master’s programs. The offer of academic and practice master’s programs can become an effective tool for the system of continuous education in Russia.
