Abstract

The interdependence of spatial structure and economic development is gaining momentum in the current period when there is competition between the regions of Europe based on uneven economic development and growth. Clusters therefore become a new way of addressing the economic growth of the regions, unemployment and financial stability, which is moving towards a new organization of the economic area. Clusters are seen as one of the means of increasing innovation performance, of increased competitiveness of enterprises and of regional development. Cluster environment has a positive effect on the emergence of new and innovative companies as well as regional development. The clusters are flexible market concentrations which aim is to gain the high possible economic profit at the lowest costs. The size of a company can be smaller in a cluster if there are a lot of appropriate suppliers, supporting companies, and institutions. Clusters are respected for theirs capability supporting innovation by means of creating the infrastructure in industrial parks, knowledge and exchanging of researchers. That is why it is the goal of this contribution is to evaluate the current status of clusters and cluster policy in Slovakia and their importance in regional development.
