CONFRONTING THE PRETENDED CREATIVITY: EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM OF SUSTAINING SOCIAL VALUES IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO
Abstract
The tendency to offer hypothetical design problems in architectural design studios is contradictory with its excuse. The assertion that neglecting some contextual inputs would increase creativity remains null as it detaches students from the realistic situations that provide a high chance of possessing a sincere motive for achieving an effective solution. Detachment from the social variables of a given context has such an impact on students who, therefore, tend to focus on formal configurations and skill demonstration in the first place. This paper presents a design studio experience configured to confront this tendency by providing a design experience with a special emphasis on social sustainability. The configuration included team working for entering the international competition Houses for Change, which required a comprehensive and extended pre-design study to design a housing project for an existing community at risk and inhabiting in a deteriorating historical environment. The function of design reasoning is exemplified with a sample student team project, together with its reflections on their problem definition, idea generation and solution processes.
