ON THE ISSUE OF SELECTING GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES AND FUNCTIONS WHEN TEACHING ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES
Abstract
Grammar is viewed as an essential element for communication because it shows how language is used. The process of grammar teaching is more successful when it deals with grammatical points that can be used for communication. The communicative view of language extended the structural view of language adding situational and functional aspects. When teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) the four language skills - listening, reading, speaking, and writing, are usually stressed equally while in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) it is a needs analysis that determines which language skills are most needed by the students. Grammatical structures are learned and used effectively when they are presented in contexts to serve communicative purposes. The paper deals with the issue of selecting the grammatical structures that are field-specific as well as incorporating them into the tailored study materials for the technology students. Some examples of the selected texts to introduce target grammar structures within the e-learning English language course at the Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies are being presented.
