Abstract

The aim of the present study is to consider the perception of synagogues in the contemporary cultural space of Latgale. The study is based on the fact that Jewish cultural heritage on the territory of Latgale has been being reconsidered. At the present stage, intensive work on the restoration of the tangible and intangible Jewish cultural heritage has been being carried out, and the objects of cultural heritage have been being transferred into the sphere of tourism. The Daugavpils synagogue is a functioning synagogue, though the museum “Jews of Daugavpils and Latgale” located in it has been successfully functioning for several years. The synagogue and the museum are the most frequently visited objects; in the evaluation and perception of these objects expressed by non-Jews the concept “exotic” is actualized. Synagogues in R?zekne and Ludza were restored by the implementation of projects and at the present moment they function as museums. The projects on the reconstruction of the synagogues had a diverse public resonance. In turn, the exhibits of the both museums are characterized by interactivity, while expts in the field of Jewish culture specify a superficial approach to the selection of materials for the exhibits. In the course of the study, the structure and the specifics of the work of the synagogues as tourist objects are analyzed; the content analysis of the reproduction of information on the synagogues in the mass media is carried out; the questionnaire survey of the dwellers of Latgale is conducted in order to find out the attitude to both the Jewish cultural heritage in the region and the process of creation of new tourist objects. The study is based on the opted methodology: structural-semantic analysis (the model of Jewish culture in the past and the contemporaneity, the structure of the museum, the contents of the exhibits, synagogue as a cult place) and social methods.
