COMPOSITION POINTS OF REFERENCE AND MUSICAL LANGUAGE ELEMENTS IN "VINGT REGARDS SUR L ENFANT JESUS" BY OLIVIER MESSIAEN
Abstract
The study aims at bringing to readers attention one of the creations of Olivier Messiaen, a composer whose name is among those who made music glorious in the 20th century European panorama. As the originality of the work, in terms of themes and structure mostly ensured by completely innovative elements would be impossible to analyze in a short paper, the adopted solution was that of a brief, but relevant presentation of its architecture and the absolutely novel ways in which the composer expressed his creative "intentions", in full agreement with the religious ideational content that was a strong and stable guide for him. The specific elements of musical language (the actual modes of pitch including the ways of applying the logic of modern mathematics in the field of artificial modes and the rhythmic patterns introduced by Messiaen into music), which require a considerable number of examples, are briefly presented, thus allowing the focus on themes and means of approaching and transforming the classic forms and patterns of creation
