TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY TRANSITION: THE NEW DECENTRALIZED PARADIGM
Abstract
Finding ways to fund the sustainability transition in a difficult financial climate is challenging. Since the sustainability transition depends on successfully increasing individuals' well-being, we suggest a new decentralized paradigm to facilitate the transition to a sustainable future. A decentralized business model emphasizes decentralized control over livelihood resources (natural resources, energy, finance, knowledge, networks) and supports individualsВ’ autonomy, relatedness and competence. While adverse effects of centralized control over livelihood resources are plausible, decentralized control over resources should be considered as a goal towards which efforts and actions are directed to achieve a green and safe future. Protecting access to livelihood resources is vital for individuals' physical health, mental health, and social functioning. We suggest some institutional improvements based on our new decentralized paradigm, which supports the value of universalism to protect the welfare of all people and nature and consequently enable the safety and stability of society, relationships and the self.
