WHAT DOES INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE MEAN TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS?
Abstract
There has always been two main tendencies in foreign language teaching at universities. The first one deals with teaching language and culture as well as developing intercultural competence. The second one dwells upon the importance of job-oriented teaching to ensure the development of professional competence. This intercultural investigation sought to analyse Russian university studentsВ’ understanding of the concept of intercultural competence and its urgency for the profession they have chosen. Future engineers (N = 24), doctors (N = 30) and teachers (N=32) - all university students completed a special questionnaire expressing their opinion on the importance of intercultural competence, their perception of this concept and an opportunity to develop it in the English class. In addition, we studied the studentsВ’ ideas on other possible ways of improving intercultural skills. Appropriate statistical techniques were used to accomplish the research: a descriptive study through frequency analysis was conducted to analyze and classify studentsВ’ responses on their main features; graphical chart was presented to detect correlation between obtained variables.
