UNPAID WORK IN THE CALCULATION OF THE SLOVAK GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT
Abstract
Unpaid work within households and volunteering result in a considerable part of a national economic output yet these activities are normally not included in the standard economic indicators, such as gross domestic product (GDP). The quantification of the volume of unpaid work in Slovakia was done through the use of surveys in Slovak households and subsequent calculations of time spent on unpaid work activities and its valuation in financial terms. The results confirmed some common trends and characteristics of unpaid work in Slovakia with other OECD countries and at the same time revealed some differences. The volume of unpaid work exceeded the value of both government expenditure and private investments for the respective year and as such should be taken into consideration when designing public policies.
