Abstract

The urban structure reflects different stages of its life cycle land use efficiency. Extensive development of Slovak cities in the second half of the 20th century in combination with the construction method, demands on infrastructure and transformation of the industry, caused that there is an enormous number of dysfunctional, unused, empty areas and degraded sites in our cities. Such areas can be regarded as a problem, but above all as a potential and driving force for re-development, the city's urban vitality generator. However, a thoughtful strategy of their transformation is important so that the urban development and the green infrastructure of the city are balanced. Parks and lines of tree alleys, rain gardens, community gardens and recreational cycling routes can complement in these areas the absence of water and greenery in the context of relationship towards large urban areas. The aim of the research is to create a methodology for the identification, categorization and subsequent urban recycling of unexploited areas in the city. The methodology defined will be verified on case studies within the city structure of Bratislava. Research has the ambition to contribute to the sustainability and vitality of the city.
