THE ADIPOKINES AND THE PROGRESSION OF NONALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE IN OBESE PATIENTS
Abstract
The purpose of the study was the evaluation of the patients suffering from obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) starting with anthropometric, biochemical, imaging data and the correlation of the serum level of leptin and adiponectin with the histopathological results. Material and method: we included in this study 20 men and 34 women diagnosed with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by recent (under 6 months) hepatic biopsy, taking usual blood samples, leptin and adiponectin. Results: According to their body mass index (BMI), 32% of the patients were overweight, 68% were obese. The histological modifications were positively correlated to elevated serum levels of the triglycerides and ALT and to an elevated BMI. AST/ALT ratio 1 in the ones with disease progression. The aminotranspherases, GGT, the triglycerides and the leptin showed elevated serum levels in all patients. We found a positive correlation between the ultrasound description of the steatosis and the serum level of ALT. Adiponectin negatively correlated with the histological classification, and the leptin did not correlate with the histological modifications. Leptin positively correlated with the abdominal circumference, BMI and the ultrasound description. Conclusion: The adipokines are definitely involved in the progression of NAFLD in the obese patients.
