TOWARDS A SYSTEMIC APPROACH. A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR CIRCULAR DESIGN IN THE TRANSITION OF A SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY
Abstract
Circular design is gaining increasing recognition as an integral approach to address the environmental challenges posed by the linear "take-make-dispose" model. However, the effective implementation of circular design requires a comprehensive understanding of its complex dynamics and interactions within a broader systems context. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for circular design underpinned by systemic design principles. This framework aims to guide designers and stakeholders in creating holistic and regenerative solutions by integrating principles from systems thinking, design thinking, and sustainability. The framework emphasizes the importance of considering the entire lifecycle of a product or service, from material sourcing to reuse, repairing, re-manufacturing and recycling, while also accounting for the socioeconomic and environmental dimensions. It encourages the adoption of strategies such as changing value chains, shared ownership, product attachment and trust and material recovery to maximize resource sufficiency and minimize waste generation. Furthermore, the framework highlights the significance of collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including designers, manufacturers, consumers, and policymakers, to foster systemic change. It provides a structured approach to identify leverage points, assess trade-offs, and inform decision-making processes throughout the design journey. The application of this framework has the potential to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy by facilitating the creation of innovative and sustainable solutions. Future research should focus on empirically testing and refining this framework to enhance its practicality and effectiveness in real-world contexts.
