IDENTIFYING EXTREMIST BEHAVIOUR IN YOUTUBE COMMENTS AND THE FORMATION OF ANTI-EXTREMIST VALUES

Abstract

Today, in the face of the rapidly growing threat of terrorism and extremism, the issue of creating a peaceful international and inter-confessional dialogue acquires an urgent significance. The research is devoted to the study of aggressive behaviour aimed at inciting interethnic hatred and discord via the comments on YouTube Videos. The Internet is used more and more in everyday life, at the same time, the potential threat of manipulative influence on the individual, especially young people, is increasing. Young people, due to their unformed emotional-cognitive sphere, are especially vulnerable to this influence. According to this, we propose the hypothesis that offensive comments on the basis of national and religious grounds on YouTube Videos lead to interethnic discord and extremism. To test the hypothesis we used the content analysis method and the methods of mathematical statistics (the Pearson correlation coefficient). 660 YouTube English, German and Russian comments concerning foreign policy issues were analyzed. With the help of Pearson's correlation a strong positive correlation between offensive comments on national and religious grounds and aggressive responses was established (Pearson r = 0.96, p = 0.0005). Also the author developed and offered the model aimed at the formation of anti-extremist values among young people. The model includes psychological, information and economic methods of combating extremism.
