THE HUMAN RIGHT TO LIVE AND DEVELOP TRENDS OF EUTHANASIA LEGALISATION IN THE EU
Abstract
In the past decade, a keen interest in the legalization of euthanasia became rather topical. The article deals with the modern problems and with one of the most debated topics – euthanasia’s legalizing in the institution of the European Union. The debate on euthanasia in modern society stays unresolved. Legal issues relating to euthanasia should be considered in close connection with the right to life, which is one of the basic and inalienable human rights. The right to life is a liberty right and also a positive right, as it provides patients with the opportunity to refrain from it. Life is the most important social and legal benefits of the individual, because all other rights, freedoms and duties lose their meaning and significance in the case of human death. The right to life is the foundation of human society, and therefore a person's life cannot be viewed as her property to dispose of, at her sole discretion. This applies not only to a person’s right to life, but also to dispose of her body.
