Abstract

The last two decades have been an intensive development of residential development in many Polish cities in areas outside of urbanized downtown areas. Unfortunately, a significant part of new settlements is carried out, more or less consciously, as detached to existing urban structures. New housing complexes, already implemented within administrative boundaries of the city or already in neighboring municipalities, create, suspended, often in open space structures, changing the way existing structures, communications and services function. Wroclaw as one of the intensively developing cities also experiences the phenomenon of suburbanization. This article is the result of research on the quality of the space created in this way. Do new suburban housing complexes create an attractive living space? Is the development of these areas in a controlled manner? These questions were the starting point to formulate the assumptions presented in this article of the method of qualitative assessment of spatial structures called The Method of Evaluation of Existing and Planned Spatial Structures with Local Indicators of Sustainable Development. The aim of the new method is to obtain a tool for the qualitative assessment of existing and planned suburban structures based on easy-to-calculate local indicators of sustainable development.
