ASSESSMENT OF QUALITY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACHING FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING WITH THE USE OF E-LEARNING MATERIALS
Abstract
Introduction: In view of the growing popularity of e-learning as a method of education in the medical field, the applied educational tool of e-learning has become increasingly important. One modern example is the educational tool "the case of virtual patient with bedsores", which incorporated the use of e-learning with the regular curriculum. Objective: Assessment of the quality and effectiveness of teaching nursing students with the use of an educational tool in form of "the case of virtual patient with bedsores" in teaching the Fundamentals of Nursing. Developed by the authors – the academic staff of the Institute of Nursing and Obstetrics at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow, Poland. Materials and methods: The methods used in the course of the study were a diagnostic survey and an achievement test. Results: More than ¾ of the respondents felt that the e-learning teaching method improved their knowledge of the subject. Most of the students were convinced that the acquisition of knowledge by means of e-learning is an interesting complement to the traditional way of learning. Statistical analysis showed a significant (chi-square = 204.8, p = 0.001) tendency towards higher performance on the achievement test by students taught using the "the case of virtual patient with bedsores" educational tool when compared to the students taught only with the use of traditional methods. Conclusions: Use of "the virtual patient case" helped in gaining the students' interest in discussed content and served as an incentive to work independently. Improvement and introduction of e-learning methods on a larger scale in nursing education has become an increasingly important issue. The challenge is to conduct and improve the evaluation of learning outcomes with the use of traditional and modern teaching methods.
