LEISURE TOURISM: MEANS OF LOCOMOTION
Abstract
Leisure Tourism has increased its share of domestic tourism both in Romania and abroad in the last decades, and so have tourism TV commercials, tourism guides, tourism flyers, etc. The Romanians are practicing new forms of leisure (e.g., golf, kart racing, rafting, river cruise, etc.) involving new means of locomotion to either get to their destinations or to spend their free time. These forms of leisure use such means of locomotion as automobile, balloon, bateau, bicycle, boat, bus, cab, canoe, ferry, gondola, hovercraft, hydroplane, jet, kayak, motorbike, plane, raft, shuttle, submarine, and yacht. Some of them are no novelty to them, but most of them are, and the specific terminology often prevents tourists from properly understanding tourism-related discourse. This paper aims to identify the best solutions in finding the proper foreign equivalents (including synonyms) for 111 English terms designating water, land, or air means of locomotion using a comparative approach. For each solution, explanations and arguments are provided in the paper. The suggestions advanced in this paper will help tourism guide authors, TV commercial editors, trained tour guides, etc. use Romanian leisure vocabulary properly.
