ARCHITECTURE AND THE REALITY OF LITERARY SPACES - THE NARRATED SPACE IN ARCHITECTURAL THEORY

Abstract

Through this paper I present the results of my research concerning the link between literature, architecture and urban space. In two scientifically supervised studies at Graz University of Technology and at the Technical University of Berlin, students approach the spatial design based on narrative texts. On the basis of the evaluations of the experiment at Graz University of Technology, it is shown that it is possible to think architecture out of the place, to write, and to develop real space drafts from this result. Mental maps and cultural connotation, which were assigned to fictional spaces, serve as a link between text space and the real world. The results show that transdisciplinary approaches to spatial design lead to interactions between the disciplines and that fictional spaces and their real-world counterparts are in constant interchange and are thus subject to a constant change in their perception and interpretation. Space design as one of the fundamental cultural components and fiction as the starting point for the realization of reality are thereby the basis of new approaches concerning university design theory and architectural practice.
