Abstract

Female education is a central topic of the historiographical debate and, particularly for the nineteenth century, it represents an original visual angle to follow the difficult and contrasted path of female emancipation, together with the emergence of the bourgeois class and with others structural changes that occurred in the Italian society in that historical phase. Over the time the affirmation of women's education has proceeded hand in hand with the development of the various societies and, in the western countries, albeit in different ways, its path has been long and slow and has reached full recognition only in the course of the early twentieth century.
