Abstract

It is hard to imagine nowadays building a competitive economy without including in the process the achievements of scientists and Ph.D. students perceived as a source of new knowledge. The process of technology transfer and commercialization of knowledge is an important driving force for economic growth and social well-being. The transfer of knowledge from academic institutions to businesses and social environment can take place through various channels such as education, publications, commissioned research, staff movement, cooperation, licensing and the creation of new business entities based on research results, so called academic spin-offs. The spin-offs constitute a way of implementing the latest scientific discoveries into industrial practice. Due to the anticipated increase in the number of such companies, the expectations they raise and the instruments of financial support which have been provided, the authors undertook the task of examining the determinants of creating technological start-ups. The purpose of the research was to analyze roles in the process, i.e. participation and importance of actors in the process of creating new enterprises in the field of academic entrepreneurship. The tasks performed by a technical university, which often owned or co-owned the intellectual property, were also analyzed. The research was conducted at a large technical university. The results constitute a recommendation for an active policy of role and resource coordination in the process of creating academic start-ups.
