HISTORY AND PRESENT EDUCATION OF CITIZENS IN SLOVAKIA

Abstract

Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts of Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Slovak Republic, prepares its students in the study program of Citizenship Education, graduates will be teachers of civics. The intention of an article is to give a picture about changes in the education of citizens since the second half of 19thcentury, as well as on the nature of the current training of future teachers, with an emphasis on the need for sociability. Changes in organization of school system reflect the socio-political transformation in modern Slovak history, which required the differential access to the education of citizen. History of school preparation are also history of the subject, objectives and content of the subject have reflected the requirements for citizen training, the name of the subject have been changed, which was expressed in the creation of text books. At present, the changes have implemented in the curriculum of Citizenship Education, whose purpose is to improve university studies. Changes affect the content pages, but there is also development of practical teaching skills of students, among which we include the need for pro-social behaviour. An indispensable basis of educating citizens in society were and are - pay attention to the development of pro-social behaviour and ability to communicate effectively, create progressive social relationships, shape values such as love, respect, tolerance and trust. The contribution pointed out to implement of teacher training for civic education with an emphasis on the creation of pro-social skills that respond to the requests of linking theory and practice. Issue of education, civics teacher preparedness to develop not only pupils' knowledge but also thinking, be open to dialogue and compromise and ability to communicate with people.
