Abstract

In our own times the consensus with respect to the validity of the European policies goes into crisis, reducing the sense of belonging of its citizens in a common destiny. The recent case of Brexit is a perfect example of the malaise in which pours European citizenship. Specifically, European citizenship poses a definitory problem: the status of European citizen depends on being citizens of one of EU member states. This dependence, which determines a relationship of superposition, tends to mask the difference of the two forms of citizenship. The sense of national membership prevails, from a subjective point of view, with respect to the common membership to EU. Through relational sociological analysis of historical and cultural mold will locate the particular characteristics of European citizenship, surpassing the absorption identitarian particularistic model. The positive affirmation and not merely supplementary European citizenship, identifies a collective identity linked inseparably to the individual national identity inspired by a "Roman model" capable of embracing the extraneous. The relatedness of these two terms in which the European identity is reflected within the terms of an emerging relational good, expresses, in its form, the contents of membership for the EU citizens, setting the European citizenship status according to a distinct paradigm from the traditional categories of membership.
