Abstract

The evolution of political metaphorical systems is one of the growing areas of political discourse studies, metaphor being the main mechanism of discourse formation. The authors stress the importance of the diachronic approach for the theory of political metaphor as national systems of political metaphors are constantly developing: each period brings new metaphors and changes national metaphorical systems. The aim of the diachronic analysis is the reconstruction of the historical course whose national systems of political metaphors have reached their final forms. The present article illustrates contributions made by scholars to the theory and methods of research of political metaphors within different periods, offers a survey of diachronic analysis of political metaphorical systems, and reveals their developmental history. The authors compare Russian and international techniques applied to studying the history of political metaphors. Aspects considered include types of discourse fragmentation used in diachronic studies of metaphors, a number of metaphorical models at various periods, trends in metaphor functioning (periods of intensive growth and periods of relative stability), drives for stability of national metaphorical systems and their change. The authors believe that diachronic analysis of national political metaphorical systems deals with the perspectives of metaphor theory development.
