DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CHILDREN AND ADULTS WHEN LEARNING LANGUAGES
Abstract
Knowledge of foreign languages is very important, and its importance has been growing in recent years. The Iron Curtain was pulled back in the early nineties, and the Czech Republic joined the European Union, resulting in ever expanding opportunities to meet and communicate with foreigners in professional or private settings, to seek out and read foreign language texts on the internet or in printed form, to watch foreign TV channels and to listen to foreign radio stations, and, last but not least, to communicate with the world via the internet. Words of foreign origin enrich Czech vocabulary; they are commonly used in domestic mass media. Positions in organisations and companies have foreign-language titles, and knowledge of one foreign language (preferably English) is a common requirement of perspective employers. People have gradually adopted the idea that language learning is not only part of compulsory schooling, secondary and tertiary school courses, but it is a life-long activity since foreign language knowledge and skills can be forgotten and lost quickly.
