THE BEAUTY OF ECO-TECHNOLOGY - THERMAL WASTE PROCESSING PLANTS AS STRUCTURES THAT INCREASE THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF CITY SPACES
Abstract
The goal of this paper is to point out the importance that thermal waste processing plants can have within an urban space. Despite the fact that the first thermal waste processing plant was built around the half of the XIX century, the question of their importance within the space of a modern city is currently very important and viable. In recent years, the number of thermal waste processing plants that are being designed has greatly increased. They are being built as environmentally friendly structures, guaranteeing the highest eco-technological standards. This is caused by a number of factors: the increase in the importance of numerous pro-environmental ideologies in an era of high environmental pollution and natural resource consumption, the necessity of effective environmental protection, as well as the legal regulations that arise due to the above in various countries. In light of the intense construction of environmentally friendly thermal waste processing plants in modern cities, it is important that these buildings fulfill not only their purely technological role, but that they also become an element of urban space for social, spatial, urban and architectural reasons. The paper provides examples of good practice in the construction of thermal waste processing plants. It provides an analysis of: their placement in relation to the more important urban units within a city, their impact on the landscape and image of cities. On the basis of the research that has been carried out, we can observe that thermal waste processing plants can fulfill other roles which are attractive to local inhabitants, apart from their basic purpose (increasing the range of available services, their educational and social qualities, etc.). They are also structures which can positively influence the space of a city and its visual expression. The research that had been carried out and the conclusions which were drawn from it can be used to perform comparative analyses of other structures of this type. Due to the fact that the chosen thermal waste processing plants are projects which are to a large extent model cases, they can serve as examples of good practice.
