THE EFFECT OF ONCOLOGICAL DISEASE ON THE FUNCTIONING OF THE FAMILY

Abstract

Oncological disease is a serious illness that affects not only the sick individual but also the family system. Oncological illness has an impact on all dimensions of life, but also on the processes and functions of the family system, on individual members of the family community. The aim of the research was to find out how a family with a cancer patient works. We focused on identifying the impact of oncological illness on the quality of family life, the needs of a family with a cancer patient, and the overall functioning of the family system. A quantitative research strategy was chosen to meet the target. Standardized measurement tools (FQOL, FNS and Family functioning scale) have been used, supplemented with a demo-based survey structure of our own design. The survey consisted of 234 respondents. Analysis of the research results has shown that the functioning of a family with a cancer patient affects the quality of family life, parental dimension as well as material well-being. Understanding the needs of a family member with an oncological disorder has a significant impact on the quality of family life, family interactions and material well-being. It is necessary to pay attention to the topic of functioning of the family with a member with cancer, since the need for engagement of social work in this area is significant. Therefore, it is necessary for the social worker to know the information about the disease, its impact and the impact on the family system. A disrupted family system may be the cause of deepening problems that can become less manageable by inadequate solutions and can lead to further social problems.
