MEDALLISTS OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES FROM THE DABROWA BASIN (SOUTHERN POLAND) IN THE PERIOD OF COMMUNISM (1944-1989)

Abstract

The D?browa Basin is a geographical and historical area established in the 19th century and located in southern Poland, with rich sports traditions. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present the profiles of sportspeople from the D?browa Basin who in the period of communism won medals for Poland at the Olympic Games. They are competitors born on the territory of the D?browa Basin or in a given Olympic year representing sports clubs, associations and organizations from the area of the Basin. A basic research method used was the analysis of historical sources with elements of deduction and induction inquiry. Sportspeople of the D?browa Basin, during the period discussed, won medals at the Olympic Games in Tokyo (1964), Mexico (1968), Munich (1972) and Montreal (1976). The medallists were as follows: Krystyna Czajkowska-Rawska (two bronze medals with the Polish national volleyball team-1964 and 1968); JГіzef Zap?dzki (two gold medals in the 25 m rapid fire pistol event-1968 and 1972); Andrzej Jarosik (gold medal with the Polish national football team-1972); Wojciech Rudy (silver medal with the Polish national football team-1976) and Ryszard Bosek, Wies?aw Gaw?owski, W?odzimierz Sadalski and Zbigniew Zarzycki (gold medal with the Polish national volleyball team-1976).
