DETERMINANTS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FORMS
Abstract
We identified factors that influence the ability and desire of people to engage in physical culture. We studied their impact on the classes of various physical activity forms. We used the data of The Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey-Higher School of Economics (RLMS-HSE), 25th wave (2016). The sample size is 1893. There are several Russian and foreign papers about determinants of physical activity. We used it to highlight the necessary factors. We used the multinomial regression for modeling. It helped us to find the difference between determinants influence on existing physical activity forms. We found that various sets of characteristics affect physical activity of different intensity, duration and severity. Light physical exercises for recreation less than three times a week are influenced by age, economic sphere, income, subjective material well-being assessment, body mass index and smoking. Exercises of medium or high severity less than three times a week are influenced by age, settlement type, economic sphere, income and subjective material well-being assessment. High-activity physical exercises at least three times a week for 15 minutes or more depend on settlement type, economic sphere, income and body mass index. Daily physical exercises for at least 30 minutes per day are influenced by age, settlement type, education level, and subjective material well-being assessment. Daily physical activity less than 30 minutes per day depends on education level, subjective material well-being assessment and smoking. Thus, the factors influence on different physical activity forms varies significantly. The multinomial regression usage allows us to understand who prefers particular forms of physical activity. So, the multinomial regression tools give a chance to provide a more in-depth study of the population preferences in the physical culture field. The government can use the research results in the state policy development and adjustment in the physical culture and sports field.
