HANDICAP AS A TOPIC IN THE LITERATURE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN SLOVAKIA IN THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY

Abstract

Presented study synthetises the research focused on the portrayal of a man in the literature for children and youth in Slovakia. Material basis for the research is both original as well as translated prosaic production published in Slovakia since mid- 19th century until 1989 (fall of the communist regime). The research findings are about to answer the following questions: 1. what is the mutual proportional representation of different types of handicap (social disadvantage and medical handicap; i.e. physical impairment, sensory impairment, and intellectual and developmental disability) in different developmental periods of the Slovak literature for children and youth; 2. How is the modification of societal attitudes towards a man with handicap reflected in the prose for children and youth; 3. What kind of modifications the topic underwent in terms of the intention to influence the attitude of a young addressee towards the issue; 4. And finally, in which way the topic influenced aesthetical value of the literary work.
