DIFFERENCES IN REACTION TIME TO DISTORTED OBJECTS OF ART- AND NON-ART HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Abstract
Domain specific knowledge such as visual art has been claimed to have an impact on the performance of various visual tasks. The limited amount of research led us to investigate where the reaction times (RT) of art- and non-art school students have been measured and compared. Data were collected from students from 3 Romanian art- and non-art high-schools. The design of the study is quasi- experimental. The purpose of this research was to investigate such difference in RT between students with different backgrounds in art education. We used a computer program that displayed 10 images of distorted everyday objects. The task was to recognize the objects on the distorted image, while the program measured the participantВ’s global RT spent on the task. RT was measured from the first sight of the distorted image until the В‘got itВ’ button was pressed by the participant. We found significant differences in RT between art and non-art school students, where art school studentsВ’ RT were found to be longer than those of non-art school students.
