TRANSFORMATION OF THE BARRACKS INTO THE URBAN STRUCTURE IN SLOVAKIA

Abstract

The transformation of the former barracks areas is a long-term topic not only in Slovakia but also abroad. Their role and value change over time in cities. The current cultural and historical values and the value of the potential development itself is a discussed topic. The paper aims to map and evaluate the transformation processes and urban structures of selected barracks in Slovakia. By these examples, we describe individual trends and methods of working with the public space and the buildings themselves. The individual stabilization, transformation and development processes differ not only from the functional usage of the proposed area, the number of demolished building, way of intensification, involvement in the city's organism, but also from the observed time period during the transformation. The research is focused on the analysis of urban formation and structure of these areas, quantitatively describes the change in the functional usage of the area and analyses the formation of the public space as a basic urban forming element. The research is further represented by the case study of Lu?enec city. The possibility of further transformation of the area with focus on sustainable urban development and strengthening the urban stability of the area with the acceptance of the future development of the area.
