SECULARIZATION AND CHANGES IN CONTEMPORARY PRACTICES AND RELIGIOUS BELIEFS
Abstract
Secularization is a profound transformation of the society, in the sense of restructuring the relations between society and religion. Contemporary society are marked by a decrease of the role of religious institutions in the sphere of public life, by an accentuation of the general processes of individualization and rationalization as well as by the replacement of the traditional religious with innovative religious convictions and practices. The mutations in the field of values, norms, beliefs and practices of contemporary religious were heavily influenced by three factors: the industrialization, the urbanization and the cultural contact. Article presents the religious context of contemporary Romanian society, succinctly analyzing the impact of these factors on practices and religious beliefs. Although the process of secularization affects society in its entirety, it is noted that its influences are more evident in the public space, while at the level of individual beliefs the religion maintains a significant influence (is observed especially a traditional religiosity).
