Abstract

The text deals with mutual relationship of the language and culture; with the influence of culture on the language and structure of its discourse in cases when Arabic is the target language and English is the language of teaching and communication in the class. It starts with a brief explanation of the main notions (language, culture); points at the differences between individualistic and collectivist cultures and their impact on the language. These differences can be observed in discrepancies that appear when we compare certain parts of social communication of such cultures, for example introductory dialogues in the two aforementioned languages, usage of personal names in social communication; and propriety or impropriety of certain topics in social communication. Since the failure to apply certain unwritten rules in communication with an Arab partner can disable its desired agreement or otherwise negatively influence its outcome, these extralinguistic aspects of communication should be incorporated into contemporary language teaching.
