IMPORTANCE OF THE FAMILY IN THE SOCIALIZATION PROCESS OF AN INDIVIDUAL

Abstract

Individual socialization is a lifelong process determined by many factors. Among the social factors that affect individual people in particular are social groups with which a person comes into contact. The most important social group to influence individual’s development, however, is the family. Functioning family environment has in the process of socialization of the individual irreplaceable importance. During socialization one becomes a cultural and social being who acts according to recognized rules directed their behavior towards socially accepted value and meet individually modified roles and expectations. Family provides initial human behavior patterns in an orientation and initial interpersonal relationships. The aim of this study was to find out how individual characteristics of family influence the acquisition of values, rules and roles. As fundamental characteristics of the families we determined the size and a form of the family. Methods: We used Quantitative research strategy and analyzed the responses of participants acquired by a questionnaire. For the tool we chose a 32-items questionnaire of our own design. From 227 questionnaires we distributed, 202 were returned (responsiveness 89%). Therefore, 202 adolescents (age 15-20 y.) were included in our study (67,33% women, 32,67% men). Results: The results showed a connection between specific type of family and a value, which young people attribute to work, fairness and friendship. Influence of different forms of family on the perception of family values, health and money was not demonstrated. Family type influences just the way young people perceive the different family roles. The link between perceptions of roles and family size, however, was not confirmed. An important area of socialization in the family is also the acquisition of basic rules and standards of functioning in society. In our research, link between general adoption of rules and standards in the family and family size has been shown. Conclusions: Know the family and its individual characteristics determining individual socialization is crucial for the proper setting of prevention and intervention activities to promote family functioning.
