WAR WITH POLAND AND PROBLEMS WITH INCORPORATION OF THE ACQUIRED TERRITORIES

Abstract

After the end of the military operations and the German occupation of Poland, the border areas around ?adca in Kysuce Region and SpiВљ region were joined to Slovakia. The population enthusiastically received reconnection of the territories to Slovakia. After the calming of the situation on the border, the formation of new public administration structures began. The situation at the borders was finally stabilized after the signing of the Slovak-German Border Treaty, on 21 November 1939 in Berlin, which temporarily determined the course of the border. The border was definitely determined during the work of the Slovak-German Delimitation Commission during the years 1939 to 1943. However, the position of the population of the Polish nationality changed. Part of Polish population was released from state services and there have been attempts to deport the Polish population outside the Slovak territory. Problems also emerged around accused and convicted persons at a time when the territory belonged to Poland. Admission of municipalities was also welcomed by regional press. The incorporation of the territory itself took place after the Constitutional Law issued on 22 December 1939. The church was also engaged in the process of the incorporation of the northern SpiВљ, Orava and Kysuce region. In Kysuce region, the municipalities re-joined and remained part of the Diocese of Nitra. The Polish priests and teachers were therefore gradually replaced by Slovaks. The Slovak Church, represented by the Diocese of SpiВљ, was not as strict in the reslovakization of the Northern SpiВљ and Orava Region as the state authorities. This fact manifested in considerable tolerance towards the Polish clergy. After rejoining Slovakia emerged a number of problems in municipalities. The municipalities suffered from a lack of basic goods, in schools were missing textbooks and the exchange of money was also quite problematic.
