THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NORTHERN BIHOR COUNTYS SETTLEMENT SYSTEM IN THE 9TH-11TH CENTURIES
Abstract
The target of this research is to demonstrate that during the 10th -11th centuries the Hungarian settlement system in Northern Bihor (Bihor County, in Romania) was based on the habitation scheme organized by Avar Empire, in the 8th-9th century. The methodology is based on the new archeological discoveries and contemporaneous etymological results of the naming mode of settlements in the area, compared to the chartered information about the mentioned period. The target of this research is to refute the theory set up by Anonymus in his opus called Gesta Hungarorum, where the Hungarian conquest was drawn very colorfully, but without any historical loyalty, but his theory was accepted and integrated in the 19th centurys Hungarian historical literature, as well as in the communist era provided references for the national identity finder Central-European historians. The final vision is to prove that Northern Bihor in the 10th -11th century was part of Hungarian realm, and it was populated by Slavic, Khazarian, Székely, Hungarian people living side by side, without any contact with the Bulgarian kingdom and to demonstrate the lack of a self-sufficing state in the precedent, 9th century.
